The Divine Romance

By Michelle McClunan

As usual, the Universe has been conspiring to provide me with exactly the material I need for October’s newsletter.  After a long, dry winter in Natal, I was feeling a little arid myself, tired, cranky and creatively somewhat stuck. So, I made a decision to head to Knysna for a short holiday with one of my oldest and dearest friends, on the beautiful farm she stays on. My head was shrieking at me… stay at home and “do, do, do”… but for once, I opted to listen to my heart and just  “be, be, be”.
One week later, after lots of hearty meals, afternoon snoozes, chats around cozy log fires, art making, walks in nature, a paddle down the Goukamma river, communing with donkeys, cats, dogs and other assorted flying, walking, buzzing beings, we’re both slowly starting to sense a quickening … a rustle of energy here… a flutter of excitement there… the first flush of enthusiasm… as the slightly submerged life spark slowly starts to ignite the fire of passion that resides deep within us… a little like falling in love actually. By slowing down, nurturing ourselves and allowing ourselves to “be”,  we’ve been strengthening our inner female; softening and becoming more receptive, so that she can provide her inner male with a warm, fertile place to land, penetrate and light the spark of new birth.  We’ve started to accept the differences and needs of our masculine and our feminine and to integrate the two.  Jung called this individuation, the alchemical transformation process of the personality into spiritual gold. And that is exactly what the astrology for the end of September and much of October is all about (see what I mean about the Universe conspiring?).  Mars in Leo (Driven, active, creative male energy) is at loggerheads with Venus in Scorpio (Passionate, intense, transformative female energy).  The Sun in Libra steps in to help bring about peace, harmony and balance through integration.  The New moon in Libra on 5th and the Lunar Eclipse in Aries on the 19th further reinforce the theme. The Uranus Pluto square becomes exact again at the end of October, so we will need to be as integrated and balanced as possible, to stay centred amidst ongoing personal and global change.
When the masculine and feminine within us is out of balance, you can bet your bottom Zimbabwean dollar that we’re going to project the lack of harmony we feel onto others, which can only lead to tension, aggression and conflict.  This is basically what’s happening in Western Society, which to a large degree, praises male energy and quashes the feminine. When last did someone ask you how you were really feeling on the inside? Usually the first thing we ask is what you’ve been “up” to, how much you’ve achieved and what you’ve been doing ‘out there in the world’.  And so, in an attempt to be seen in the eyes of the world as successful, we favour and strengthen the masculine and downplay the feminine. The problem is, whatever we’re oppressing, rejecting, judging or withholding has to have an effect on the opposite. Hard as we might try to keep them apart, the masculine and feminine within us can never be separated – they are woven into the very fabric that is us.Let’s look at the archetypal male and female qualities that are found within us all, so we can get an idea of what might need some tweaking. Give whatever is more active in your life 1 point and then add up either column to see which one is more dominant at the moment.
Who’s wearing the pants?
Moon / Egg/ Earth, Water/ Yin/ Soul Sun / Sperm/ Fire, Air / Yang/ Spirit
Lean back
In, down, under
Push forward
Out, up, above
If you’re feeling stressed, anxious, brittle, filled to the brim with busyness, rational ideas, lists and strategies, but have difficulty in manifesting them into anything tangible, your inner male is probably running the show.If you’re feeling hyper emotional, heavy, lethargic, confused, stagnant or unable to move forward, your inner female is wearing the pants. What’s probably needed is a good dose of active, animating male energy to hoof her out of her sludge.
Here’s an example of how the dance can play out. We feel a pain, ache or discomfort. An awareness arises within us that we need to pause, nurture, turn inward, slow down and relax. Society and survival say “No way Jose – keep trucking – what about the rent?”  So we march on like true little soldiers… firing off a relentless stream of busy little idea sperms into the world.  If we can just push a little harder, succeed a little more, be more disciplined, more focused, then we’ll feel secure and things will be just dandy.  In the war we wage on the world, the feminine side of us gets relegated to the sidelines like ugly floral wallpaper as we continue to climb our ‘oh so important’ mountains.
And then suddenly, the earth shifts and we feel ourselves slipping … an accident, illness, retrenchment, break-up or some situation arises that more or less brings us to our knees.  We have no choice.  We stop because we have to… our thirsty souls have designed it that way.  We spend time being, nurturing, replenishing, listening, renewing and softening, so that when that little sperm cell comes a’cruisin’, it finds a soft fertile place to land. And then, it’s a lot like a love story… that first flush of romance when we feel special and cherished, we start to remember the things we once loved about ourselves; sparkling new ideas start to appear as if out of a fog; the life spark that we thought may have been lost forever starts to ignite. We start to feel capable, grounded, confident, ready to commit to this new unconditionally loving Divine Romance and dance the dance of life.
What’s the status of your inner marriage? Does your male have a nurturing place to come home to?  Do you tell each other how much you love each other or snipe at each other?  Do you appreciate your differences and love each other anyway, like you did in the beginning?  Do you still cherish you?  Are you faithful to you?  Do you buy you flowers, write you love letters, stick to the vows you make to yourself?  Is your marriage bed sacred or do you allow creepy characters to threaten its sanctity?  What if you were to fall in love with all of you again and commit to yourself in Holy Matrimony?

Today’s tricky but powerful last quarter moon in Cancer could result in us feeling more sensitive, a tad more clingy and needy than normal. Conflicts, caused by old hurts and feelings we may have swept under the carpet could arise within us and play out in our relationships. When buttons are pushed, my advice would be to breathe, soften and see if you can let whatever feelings arise just be there for a few moments and then let them pass through you like a wave This is potentially a powerfully cathartic and healing day, particularly if we are receptive and not resistant… if we flow with the river, rather than try to stop it.

The most profound thing we can in the next few days is to gently tend and nurture the gardens of our own hearts – weeding out and letting go of whatever might be stopping the flow in our lives. This is in preparation for the next new moon on 5th October, when new seeds will want to be planted.

I’m available for private one-on-one consultations in Durban and on Skype

This week Venus, the planet of love and relationships joins with Saturn the stern task- master, in passionate Scorpio, building up to the full moon on the 19th. We all might experience a whole lot of intensity, if not irritation or impatience in our interactions with others, be they romantic partners, close friends or colleagues. The energy reminds me of a tango, with two dancers moving in an intimate, exquisite tension. Push… Pull….not to close…pull away…push….join together again.

Used positively, this can be an exciting time to bring to the surface whatever’s not working or has become stale or heavy. We can then make some fresh agreements and ignite some passion, excitement and creativity to let some of the steam out of the pressure cooker (if you’re on your own, do this for yourself)

The thing is, if egos get in the way and both parties are determined to be right, our beautiful tango could land up being a “not so pretty” toe-stomping exercise. The challenge this week is to engage in the dance, stay in your own power, count to 140 before you react, assess what the other person is mirroring or bringing to the surface for you, then take a few looong deeeeep breaths and then speak your truth. Every interaction, even when it triggers unwanted feelings, is a gift and how we engage with it is a part of our growth and transformation.

Lifelight Astrology September 2013

Stand tall and proud

Sink your roots deeply into the earth
Reflect the light of your true nature
Think long term
Go out on a limb
Remember your place among all living beings
Embrace with joy the changing seasons
For each yields its own abundance
The energy and birth of spring
The growth and contentment of summer
The wisdom to let go the leaves in the fall
The rest and quiet renewal of winter

Feel the wind and the sun
And delight in their presence
Look up at the moon that shines down upon you
And the mystery of the stars at night
Seek nourishment from the good things in life
Simple pleasures
Earth, fresh air, light
Be content with your natural beauty
Drink plenty of water
Let your limbs sway and dance in the breezes
Be flexible
Remember your roots
Enjoy the view!

 Ilan Shamir

I have always had a deep and abiding love for trees. As a child, where there was a tree, there was me… clambering up her, hanging from her branches or just sitting in her warm embrace. The trees in my life have always and still do provide me with a sense of safety and security and, like all of nature are real teachers to me. This poem resonated so deeply with me and seems like perfect advice for us all, during these somewhat turbulent times.

It seems to fit too, with the Sun’s passage through Virgo, a mutable (adaptable) Earth sign. What is a tree, if not steady, rooted, grounded and yet completely adaptable at the same time?  And that’s precisely what’s being asked of us during these crazy times we find ourselves in.

Taking the Advice from the Tree a little further – you may want to ask yourself this month…

  • How are you standing in your life – are you steady, rooted, grounded and adaptable at the same time?
  • Are you standing strongly in the light of your own power or are you in the shadow of others?
  • Do you have a strong enough root system to continue to stand, even if those around you fall or depart?
  • Are you flexible enough to bend and sway with the winds of change and can you accommodate the needs of others?
  • Are you able to let go of old brittle branches that may be weighing you down?  Can you move on, when something is over and embrace the new?
  • Are you able to let down your defences (drop your leaves) and expose your vulnerability?
  • Do you perhaps need to strengthen your roots, spread them deeper and further, so they help you to withstand the storms of life?
  • Can you spread your branches wider and higher, expand your horizons… reach further towards the light?
  • How’s the health of your tree  – are you getting enough nutrients from the soil (food), sunlight and water?
  • Is there any situation or person who may be robbing you of your life force? I have a beautiful Mdoni tree in my garden and I was recently advised to remove some of the plants growing on it because they were leaching some of the nutrients out. It was hard to do, because they were so pretty, but they had to go – the well being of the tree comes first.  How important is your own well being and is there anything that needs to be trimmed from your life in order to free up energy?
  • Can you welcome the changing seasons, ageing and loss as much as you embrace new growth and blooming?
  • Can you remain firmly, but gently in your own space, despite the opinions and actions of others, accepting yourself exactly as you are?

Virgo energy helps us to separate the wheat from the chaff in our lives, analyse what’s good and what’s not, bring order to chaos, focus on healing, put in place healthy routines, reassess our contribution to the world, the impact we are having on Mother Earth and streamline our lives so that we have more time for what really matters.

And what matters most is our own healing – we really are all connected, so when we heal ourselves, we contribute to healing the world as well.

During the first few days of the month, as the moon wanes, clear out any toxins in your body and ask yourself if there are any  unhealthy mental, emotional and physical patterns or habits that you can release.  Then on the day of the new moon on 5th September, we have a wonderful opportunity to plant the seeds for deep and profound healing.

If there are any health issues that you’ve been masking or ignoring, now is the time to take full responsibility for you own health and pay attention to them. So many of us spend our lives hurtling at great speed from one thing to another that we don’t listen to what our bodies are telling us.  When something’s out of whack physically, we normally get a signal of sorts at the very beginning, in the form of a discomfort or pain. These warning signs are a little like the oil light that comes on in our cars.  Most often, when that happens, we’ll stop, pull in at the nearest garage and investigate what the cause is.  We do not (generally J) put a sticker over the light and pretend it’s not blinking at us madly, which would be a  lot like popping a pill to take away a symptom.  Neither do we haul out the whole oil tank – which is like removing an offending organ when it plays up. With ALL that is happening “out there” at the moment, so many people I know are tired and health problems seem to be coming to the surface. These are hefty nudges, if not kicks in the butt to slow down and pay attention to what our bodies are telling us – before our engines start to seize.  (By the way I’m only just starting to really get this myself, in case you were wondering).

In the work I do it never fails to amaze me how accurately we can tune into what’s amiss in our lives mentally, physically, emotionally and energetically by just checking in with our bodies.  We are all far more intuitive than we give ourselves credit for and we have an innate ability to heal ourselves.  The same self diagnostic, repair and regeneration system that heals a cut by forming a scab, immediately goes into action when something goes wrong with our bodies and we have the capacity to help that process along.

The fact that we consciously play a role in our own healing is finally being recognised by mainstream doctors and the scientific community.  Research has proven that patients using guided imagery for example. come through  surgery with 50% of the complications, experience 50% bleeding and pain and get out of hospital quicker than those not using it.

Harnessing the imagination through interactive guided imagery is one of the most powerful techniques we can use to trigger the body’s intrinsic healing ability.  I’m using it more and more in my own life and in my work, because I can feel and see the results.

I’ll be running a workshop on Saturday 14th September where I’ll be teaching how to set up and cultivate a dialogue with our bodies. Healing comes from within and if it’s not happening for you, working with imagery can give it a nudge and set the wheels in motion for your body to self correct. Click on “latest Workshop” for details. Please email me as soon as possible if you’d like to attend, as space is limited.

From the time of the full moon in Pisces on the 19th September, during the spring equinox on the 21st until the 27th September, we have an interesting collaboration “out there” which links Karma to Destiny. We’re likely to feel the forces of  fate more strongly, so during this time, its good to pay more attention to your dreams, listen for guidance and watch for “synchronicities” with regard to your life purpose.

And last but not least,  I’m so excited that I have  finally  put together this interactive  Community Facebook page, where I’m posting regular astrological updates, insights and inspirations to help us all to navigate the journey to ourselves. In a broader context, the purpose of the page is to initiate self inquiry and interaction as a community, spread light, positive energy and help to raise consciousness. As you and I raise our vibration, others’ vibrations automatically rise to meet it…so we really can help to change the world.
